How Pre-service Teachers Turned a University Laboratory for Pupils for Sustainable Water Purification into a CLIL Lesson

This article presents the Study Group for the subjects chemistry and English. During the one-week Summer School, pre-service teachers of both subjects collaborated to transform an experiment on sustainable water purification developed in the chemistry education group into a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) scenario and by doing so develop an exemplary concept for teaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a bilingual or interdisciplinary lesson. The concept was carried out with a 6th grade class in the University Laboratory for Pupils of the University of Potsdam. The article first presents the preliminary theoretical considerations about CLIL, the chemical and pedagogical foundations of the experiment, and the affordances and challenges of teaching the SDGs in both subjects. This is followed by a presentation of the schedule and design of the Study Group and reflections on the experiences gained.
