Abstract

Increasing population-level physical activity is crucial for improving long-term health and well-being outcomes. Collaborative efforts between sectors underpin and strengthen global and national strategies to promote active lifestyles. This research explores the dynamics of cross-sector partnerships in addressing physical inactivity. It encompasses a systematic literature review, a national case study, and stakeholder interviews involving organizations of varying sizes, sectors, and community groups. The study examines partnerships aimed at increasing physical activity in diverse contexts. Additionally, interviews with strategy-level leaders provide insights into partnership culture and multi-level engagement, validating findings from the literature review and stakeholder interviews. Key findings emphasize the critical role of relationship-building and trust maintenance for long-term partnership success. Challenges identified include securing sustained funding and achieving tangible outcomes. Nevertheless, the study highlights the potential of nurturing enduring relationships within the system as a vital strategy for addressing complex public health issues like physical inactivity over time. This research sheds light on the challenges and opportunities inherent in cross-sector partnerships, contributing to a deeper understanding of effective approaches to promoting physical activity and improving public health outcomes. It underscores the importance of fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders and developing resilient partnerships to navigate dynamic socio-economic contexts. The insights from this research can inform the development of practice-informed strategies for promoting physical activity through cross-sector partnerships and enhancing the health and well-being of future generations.
