Geometric Optimization of Indeterminate Truss Structures under Non-Loading Effects
Despite the non-loading effects leading to a significant change in the internal forces of structural members and may result in structural collapse; however, if the error of construction is under control, the results will be aligned to the advantage of the structures. The arrangement of members in different scenario configurations may reduce or increase the effect of lack of fits. This study aims to compare the forces in members generated due to selected values of lack of fits with those due to various magnitudes of external loading. The significance of the non-loading effect is investigated. Consequently, two types of statically indeterminate trusses which have identical members, dimensions, and properties with different member arrangements are investigated. The principle of virtual work by unit load method is used for this purpose. To summarize, several parameters can significantly affect the balance between the lack of fit and external loading such as axial rigidity, members’ configuration, the value, and the sequence of applying the error of construction. In conclusion, the construction error can be used as a prestressing technique to reduce the amount of generated force by external force in critical members if employed properly.
