Macroscopic Traffic Flow Modeling (Case Study In Bahir dar city at Selected Road Segments)

<div>The goal of this paper is to explore the characteristics of road segments by developing a model that will enable scientifically descriptive estimator of macroscopic traffic flow parameters and the relationship between them (namely; speed, volume and density) in road segments of Bahir Dar city. Also the research aims to analyze the segments level of service and capacity. Method used for the study segments include, geometric data collection by using field measure and traffic flow parameters collected by using video recording. The parameters are used to develop diagram and mathematical model in each segments and cumulative functions parameters of Bahir Dar city. The analysis model conducted by using three conventional models of Greenshield’s, Greenberg’s and Underwood’s different speed-density models were develop and the best model for each segments and for the city is selected. Level of service analysis is computed by using travel speed of vehicles as a criteria and capacity analysis is done by using volume to capacity ratio. The study result shows that Greenberg relationship represents the flow condition from Giorgis to Gebya and from Zmamneshe building to Mesgid and Gebya to NOC represent by Underwood’s model as well. Also the performance of road segments is poor, since level of service of road is operating under LOS D and the saturation level of two segments is below saturation and one segment operating at saturation level. There have to be a measure by installing pedestrian over pass, minimizing number of bajaj and avoiding on street parking on traffic lane.</div>
