On Permeable Zones

A written thesis supplementing a body of work presented in an exhibition at the John and June Allcott Gallery from March 4-8, 2024. The work is conceptully focused on the boundary between digital and physical reality and intends to prompt consideration of where the line is maintained between what exists within screens and what exists beyond them among bodies and physical space. This is executed with the assertion that this relationship can have a violence that is relational and contextual, a violence in operation, as much as it can have a violence in visual depiction and content. Transgression and abjection are key elements, with appropriation the work’s primary mechanism of creation. Digital viewership is translated into physical reality, and the boundaries between the two zones interrogated, through making the consumption of virtual images analog and dependent on the body rather than purely cerebral and visual.
