Interpreting SysML diagrams in conjunction with OWL ontologies for semantic reasoning and inference

This paper investigates how to enrich SysML (Systems Modeling Language) models by integrating them with the semantic reasoning capabilities of OWL to find out whether model analysis can be improved by inferring new relationships and detecting inconsistencies. To answer this, we propose a methodology that systematically translates SysML block definition and requirements diagrams into OWL and then represents the resulting data in an RDF graph database. The method infers new topological and requirement-based insights, demonstrating improved model accuracy and deeper information extraction. This result is significant for engineers and systems designers, enhancing decision-making and error detection, especially within the context of modular design and cyber-physical systems. Moreover, the findings pave the way for further research into hybrid modeling approaches, suggesting promising avenues for integrating formal semantics into model-based systems engineering.
