Seeing Inside You; Failures of Community Benefits Spending in Hospitals

My connected focus for my STS project and my technical report is on failures within the American medical system. My technical report addresses the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) devices utilized as training simulators for medical professionals. The goal of this technology is to expose these people to a wider variety of models to train on, allowing underrepresented groups to receive better care. My STS project focuses on the healthcare institution as a whole and how hospitals are unable to properly serve vulnerable populations. The same people who are underrepresented in medical training frequently have difficulty finding services that suit them. This is strongly connected to my technical report, which proposes a solution to one aspect of this problem. Together, these projects work to provide an understanding of how the current medical system works and why systematic failures persist, affecting the availability and quality of healthcare.
