Safe surgical practices for the construction of elimination stomas to prevent and reduce postoperative complications: a scoping review
This scoping review aims to evaluate the scope and nature of evidence-based recommendations for the safe surgical construction of stomas, identifying best practices to minimize postoperative complications. Additionally, it seeks to highlight gaps in the current evidence base, pinpointing practices that lack robust scientific support and may require further research. The creation of stomas is a widely used surgical procedureinthemanagement of various conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Despite its clinical relevance, postoperative complications are common, largely due to surgical techniquesandprocedures, and they negatively impact patient outcomes. Given the clinical relevance of stoma creation and the frequent occurrence of postoperative complications, this review focuses on recent advancements in evidence-based surgery. It includes guidelines, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and protocols relevant to healthcare professionals, while excluding outdated or non-applicable studies to ensure the most relevant findings.
