Impact of Diabetes on Swallowing Function in Adults: Scoping Review
Background: Diabetes Mellitus is an endocrine disorder that affects the entire body and may contribute to the development of oropharyngeal dysphagia. Objective: To map the literature through a bibliographic survey in order to investigate the impact of the presence of diabetes mellitus on swallowing function. Methods: This is a scoping review to be conducted based on the steps proposed by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews (JBI). An electronic search will be performed across databases and gray literature: SCOPUS, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, LILACS, and Google Scholar. The main descriptors related to the investigated topic will be cross-referenced with their respective synonyms and free terms. Two independent reviewers will conduct the selection and extraction of studies based on titles and abstracts, as well as through full-text reading. In the event of discrepancies, a third reviewer with greater expertise will convene a meeting to reach a consensus. The Ryann platform will be utilized to facilitate the organization, screening, and resolution of conflicts in the selection of articles. The data will be synthesized and described with a focus on the outcomes.
