Perception of The Usage of ChatGPT in Writing Essay

This research examines the views of university students on the use of ChatGPT, a language model tool, when writing essays. Given the increasing infiltration of artificial intelligence within educational contexts, especially academic writing, the study seeks to assess the perceptions of ChatGPT usability regarding its benefits and opportunities. 500 undergraduate students from different departments were asked about their reflections on the use of the technology through the invention of a descriptive qualitative method. The major findings showed that students recognized the ability of ChatGPT to assist Polish grammar, correction of the structure, and generation of ideas, however, many voiced fears about excessive use of AI, issues of academic ethics, and loss of critical thinking skills. Thematic analysis revealed mixed feelings towards CAs, with students perceiving these as helpful for eliciting ideas and feedback, while also being careful not to rely too heavily on these resources as this may restrict their critical thinking. Therefore, the study calls for proper integration of AI in education – combined with a call for regulations that use new technologies to enhance, instead of replacing, proper learning and appreciation for good writing.
