ABSTRACT: This study compares mainland China's Pinyin system and Taiwan's Zhuyin (Bopomofo) system in the education of Mandarin Chinese. The Pinyin system, developed in the 1950s, utilizes the Latin alphabet and diacritic marks to represent Mandarin sounds and tones, making it widely recognized and utilized globally. Conversely, the Zhuyin system, with its roots in the early 20th century, employs unique symbols derived from Chinese characters, coupled with tone marks, and is predominantly used in Taiwan for language instruction. This comparison highlights the strengths and applications of both systems, considering factors such as ease of learning, usage in digital input methods, and their roles in preserving linguistic heritage. Ultimately, the study underscores how each system contributes to Mandarin Chinese education, catering to different learning needs and cultural contexts.
