Stereotyping MBTI personality types in online communities
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is one of many personality tests based on self-reported answers. Despite the controversy (e.g., lack of scientific and empirical questionnaires) over the accuracy of dividing people's personalities into only 16 groups, it has gained attention on social media. Users in online communities share their experiences of interacting with certain MBTI types by stereotyping and generalizing certain behaviors or tendencies based on MBTI types, often exaggerating or simplifying people's characteristics. This study aims to study how people on social media stereotype MBTI personality types by taking advantage of large-scale data collected from Reddit.
