Emotionally Intelligent Teaching Checklist

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an essential element of early childhood education, but few early childhood educators receive support for explicitly teaching SEL skills. Based on learning theory and best practice, emotionally intelligent teaching (i.e., explicitly teaching social and emotional skills) includes behaviors and practices teachers can use throughout the day in various situations to promote children’s social and emotional skills. Although there has been a dramatic increase in the number of intervention programs targeting the development of social and emotional skills in early childhood, there remains a gap in the literature about how to effectively assess the teaching of these skills as well as how to assess growth and change in pedagogical skills and practices over time. The Emotionally Intelligent Teaching Checklist (EITC) is based on a framework for teaching social and emotional skills that emphasizes the importance of emotion in SEL.
