Evaluation of the Anticonvulsant Potential of Euterpe oleracea Martius (Açaí): A Literature Review of Experimental Studies

This integrative review investigates the anticonvulsant potential of Euterpe oleracea Martius (açaí) in experimental studies, given the global prevalence of epilepsy and seizures, particularly in developing countries with limited access to conventional pharmacological therapies. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, BVS, and LILACS, identifying six original studies. Most utilized in vivo seizure induction models and demonstrated anticonvulsant effects of açaí, mainly through GABAA receptor modulation and antioxidant activity. Methodological assessment revealed a risk of bias, especially due to lack of blinding and randomization, but the GRADE analysis rated the overall quality of evidence as moderate. These findings highlight açaí as a promising natural therapeutic alternative, though further robust clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in humans.
