Juvenile Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis: A scoping review

Juvenile onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis is a benign squamous lesion associated with HPV infection. This lesion can lead to laryngeal obturations, which can cause disabling dyspnea, or transform into squamous cell carcinoma. It is challenging to treat due to its viral nature, recurrent course, and its ability to spread along both the upper and lower respiratory pathways, as well as within the pharyngeal mucosa. The aim of this scoping review is to provide an epidemiological and clinical overview of the JoRRP to understand the controversies in terms of research and the development of medical and therapeutic management tools. Based on this, a scoping review will encompass both experimental and quasi-experimental study designs, and analytical observational studies. Additionally, systematic and scoping reviews meeting the inclusion criteria will be considered, depending on the research question. To conduct this study, three independent reviewers will select articles from the Cochrane Library, Embase, LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science. Additional literature will be searched through Google Scholar, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, expert consultation, and manual searches of bibliographies of included studies published until 2025. An experienced health sciences librarian will assist in developing the search strategy. After independent research and approval by the fourth reviewer, the selected articles will be exported to the reference manager to remove duplicates and then exported to screening software. There will be no language restrictions. The results will be presented in a narrative description, supported by tables, graphs, and maps to enhance understanding. Additionally, conceptual categories will be presented, covering intervention type, sample characteristics (such as sample size, gender and age), intervention characteristics, study objectives, methodology, main conclusions, and identified gaps in the existing literature.

Juvenile onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis is a benign squamous lesion associated with HPV infection. This lesion can lead to laryngeal obturations, which can cause disabling dyspnea, or transform into squamous cell carcinoma.
