Efficacy and Safety of the Combined Use of Antidiabetic Drugs: Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors (SGLT2) and Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP 1): A Scoping Review

This scoping review investigates the efficacy and safety of the combined use of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists in the management of diabetes mellitus (DM). While both drug classes have demonstrated significant individual benefits in glycemic control, cardiovascular outcomes, and renal protection, evidence regarding their concomitant use remains limited. A search was conducted across five databases (BVS, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science), following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) framework. The study aims to synthesize available evidence, address gaps in knowledge, and inform clinical practice by evaluating therapeutic efficacy and patient safety outcomes. Findings from this review have the potential to contribute to integrated treatment strategies for optimizing diabetes care.
