'Gold Standard' for Who? Questioning Routine CBT for Youth with Chronic Health Conditions

Many adolescent and emerging adults living with chronic health conditions not only find routine use of CBT to be ineffective, but also invalidating and detrimental to whole person health. However, many alternative approaches exist that demonstrate high acceptance, and effectiveness for this population. In this article led by youth, experiential accounts are provided with linked evidence showing that it's time to re-orient the meaning of 'gold standard' therapeutic approaches, to instead consider the contexts of diverse youth realities.

Abstract

Many adolescent and emerging adults living with chronic health conditions not only find routine use of CBT to be ineffective, but also invalidating and detrimental to whole person health. However, many alternative approaches exist that demonstrate high acceptance, and effectiveness for this population. In this article led by youth, experiential accounts are provided with linked evidence showing that it's time to re-orient the meaning of 'gold standard' therapeutic approaches, to instead consider the contexts of diverse youth realities.
