True to Life? Images, Words, and Sounds
The second in a series of short essays on the power of sound, continuing the explorations started in my books The Hum of the World: A Philosophy of Listening (2019; https://tinyurl.com/hmworld) and Experiencing Sound: The Sensation of Being (2024; https://tinyurl.com/expsnd), both published by the University of California Press. The topic of this entry is verisimilitude, a pictorial concept here extended into the field of sound, specifically music, with examples from Tchaikovsky (the tone poem "Francesca da Rimini") and Scxhoenberg (his Second String Quartet).
