A REVIEW ON HERBAL POTENTIAL FOR TREATMENT OF PEPTIC ULCER
Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a common gastrointestinal disorder marked by lesions in the stomach or duodenum lining, primarily caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, excessive use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and oxidative stress. Conventional therapies, including proton pump inhibitors and antibiotics, often present limitations such as side effects, recurrence, and antimicrobial resistance. This has driven interest in herbal medicines as potential alternatives or complementary therapies due to their natural origin, safety profile, and multifunctional properties. This review examines the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants and their bioactive constituents in the prevention and treatment of PUD. Key herbs such as *Glycyrrhiza glabra* (licorice), Zingiber officinale (ginger), Aloe vera, and Curcuma longa (turmeric) are highlighted for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-H. pylori, and gastroprotective activities. Phytochemicals like flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and saponins are explored for their roles in promoting ulcer healing and enhancing mucosal defense. Although preclinical and some clinical studies show promising results, challenges such as variability in active compounds and limited standardization persist. This review emphasizes the need for rigorous clinical trials and standardized formulations to validate the safety and efficacy of herbal remedies, offering insights into their potential as sustainable solutions for peptic ulcer management. Keywords : Peptic Ulcer, Helicobacter pylori, Gastrin, Herbs.
