Survey of Semantic interoperability in digital libraries and proposing a model for Iranian digital libraries

The main objective of the present research is to propose a suitable model for the semantic integration of digital libraries in Iran. In this regard, six fundamental questions were formulated to achieve the stated main goal. In the initial stages of the study, a library research method was employed. In subsequent phases, an analytical survey method was used to identify the quality and type of bibliographic content in Iran's digital libraries. Common tools were utilized in this method for data collection and analysis. In the third phase, a systems analysis method was used to present the proposed model. The research population for identifying the current status of the metadata content in digital libraries consisted of the officials from 26 digital libraries. To gather information in this area, a researcher-designed questionnaire was used. For collecting data regarding the output of metadata in digital library information systems, 11 software programs were identified, and the research population included these software programs. A checklist and direct observation by the researcher were used to gather information from these software programs. The results of the research indicated that the digital libraries under study utilize various metadata standards. Additionally, the standard metadata outputs also exhibit a diversity of access options. Furthermore, the data presentation model can, in some cases, be used as an information retrieval model and, in other cases, as a simultaneous search model. Regarding the completion of content fields, the results of this research showed that the current status of these fields is not satisfactory and does not meet future needs for establishing semantic relationships, indicating that more attention should be given to these matters. Finally, considering the capabilities, facilities, and existing conditions, a combined model for semantic integration was proposed in this research for the semantic integration of digital libraries.
