Exploration of solid solutions in the ZrB₂-HfB₂-TiB₂ ternary
Solid solution ternary ZrB₂-TiB₂-HfB₂ non equimolar compositions were produced utilizing the novel arc melting method and commercially available powders. These were confirmed utilizing XRD and EDS mapping. Since the arc-melter can provide an environment free of contaminates and quenched cooling, creating a single solid phase solution free of contaminates was achieved. These tests conclusively demonstrate the yield of a single-phase solid solution with a relatively homogenous compositional spread within the sample. This thereby demonstrates arc melting as a viable method to easily produce ultra-high purity compositions.
