Gaps in Public Diplomacy: Analyzing the Approaches of Veteran Authors
This volume comprises 18 chapters organized into three thematic categories: actors, disciplines, and instruments in public diplomacy. Veteran scholars contribute to a comprehensive examination of public diplomacy’s evolution, highlighting the expansion of communicative actors beyond states to include international organizations, corporations, cities, and citizens. The multidisciplinary nature of the field is explored through diverse lenses, including international relations, communications, and public relations. The volume also surveys a variety of public diplomacy instruments such as cultural diplomacy, branding, digital diplomacy, and international exchanges. While the book offers valuable insights by assembling experienced experts, this review identifies notable gaps, particularly the insufficient engagement with concepts of soft power, the evolving purpose of public diplomacy, and the emerging role of artificial intelligence. These omissions suggest a need to reconsider traditional paradigms in light of contemporary changes in global communication and influence.
