Critical Velocity Threshold in Nuclear Fission:Quantum Decoherence at the Scission Point

We establish a critical velocity threshold vcrit =pπ¯h/(m∗Δt) for nuclear fission, where m∗represents the collective deformation mass. For Δt = 10−20 s, we obtain vcrit ≈ 2.9 × 105 m/s for235U. When deformation velocity exceeds this threshold, decoherence triggers scission, explainingthe observed fragment velocities of ∼ 1.4 × 107 m/s and ∼ 200MeV energy release.

Abstract

We establish a critical velocity threshold vcrit =pπ¯h/(m∗Δt) for nuclear fission, where m∗represents the collective deformation mass. For Δt = 10−20 s, we obtain vcrit ≈ 2.9 × 105 m/s for235U. When deformation velocity exceeds this threshold, decoherence triggers scission, explainingthe observed fragment velocities of ∼ 1.4 × 107 m/s and ∼ 200MeV energy release.
