¿Desaparecidas o escondidas? Análisis de la presencia de las ciencias sociales y las humanidades en las versiones online de The Guardian, El País y Público / Disappeared or hidden? Analysing the presence of social sciences and humanities in online ve

This article explores the representation of social sciences and humanities (SSH) in online science journalism, focusing on three major digital news outlets: The Guardian (UK), El País (Spain), and Público (Portugal). Through content analysis of 208 articles published in 2020, the study evaluates the prevalence, placement, and genre of SSH-related content in comparison to hard science topics. Results show that SSH accounts for 33.65% of science news, with disciplines such as history and economics leading the coverage. Notably, these articles are more frequently found in supplements or general sections, rather than in dedicated science pages, and tend to be framed as expert commentary rather than newsworthy research findings. The study underscores the persisting hierarchical distinction between STEM and SSH in media narratives, reflecting broader epistemological biases. It advocates for a broader conceptualisation of scientific journalism that includes SSH as integral to public understanding of science. The findings contribute to discussions on the visibility and valuation of diverse knowledge domains in digital journalism ecosystems.
