Calculus of Polynomials: A Finite Mathematics Approach

Our purpose here is to show that the calculus of polynomials can be developed using the usual operations of arithmetic and without appealing to “limits”. This means, that the calculus of polynomials can be developed on the basis of the ordered field properties of the set of real numbers, without appealing to the completeness axiom. Thus, what we are concerned with are operations that lie within the scope of linear algebra , and hence our approach to the calculus of polynomials pursued in this note can be viewed as an application of “one-dimensional linear algebra”.

Abstract

Our purpose here is to show that the calculus of polynomials can be developed using the usual operations of arithmetic and without appealing to “limits”. This means, that the calculus of polynomials can be developed on the basis of the ordered field properties of the set of real numbers, without appealing to the completeness axiom. Thus, what we are concerned with are operations that lie within the scope of linear algebra , and hence our approach to the calculus of polynomials pursued in this note can be viewed as an application of “one-dimensional linear algebra”.
