Pope Gregory XIII gave us the leap year – but his legacy goes much further
This article explores the legacy of Pope Gregory XIII, best known for reforming the calendar to create the Gregorian system still in use today. The reform corrected inaccuracies in the Julian calendar by adjusting the leap-year system and realigning the calendar with the solar year. Beyond this achievement, Gregory XIII made significant contributions to Catholic Church reforms following the Council of Trent, urban development in Rome, and the codification of canon law. His tenure was characterised by intellectual engagement, centralisation of Church governance, and the commissioning of artistic works that reflected the triumph of Christianity. His enduring influence is reflected in both religious and cultural history.
