Validation of an efficacy of lying scale
Efficacy of lying is the belief that lying is an effective and efficient communication strategy. A new measure of efficacy of lying is presented to assess the belief that lying is an effective way to influence the behavior and beliefs of others. The current study (<i>N</i> = 632) found evidence that the measure is associated with the frequency of lying, self-reported lying ability, and personality traits associated with lying (low honesty and Machiavellianism). The measure’s value was also demonstrated as a moderator of the relationship between general persuasive ability and the use of deception. The data were consistent with the construct validity of the measure and its usefulness in exploring deceptive message production.
