Advances in Synthetic Biodegradable Polymers: Scaled-up Structuring and High Performance
Synthetic biodegradable polymers have been regarded as more “green” polymers compared to traditional petroleum-based polymers daily used. However, achieving comparable performance for these polymers remains a significant challenge for their successful commercialization. It is known that hierarchical condensed structure, including crystallites and amorphous structure, essentially determines the performance of polymer products. Recent advancements in scaled-up “structuring” processing techniques and equipment are significant in tuning the hierarchical condensed structure of synthetic biodegradable polymers. Meanwhile, more and more new synthetic biodegradable polymers with high-performance and multi-functional have been fabricated via “structuring” processing. This review mainly summarizes the recent advances in scaled-up “structuring” processing techniques. The formation and evolution of hierarchical condensed structure including crystalline structure and amorphous structure under the “structuring” processing are elucidated. Additionally, the relationship between the tunable structure and performance is clarified. The review could offer a potential avenue for broadening the applications of structured synthetic biodegradable polymers that exhibit remarkable performance.
