Pharmacognostic Study of Borago officinalis L. author’s summary (автореферат)

This author’s summary (автореферат) presents key findings from the pharmacognostic study of Borago officinalis L., aimed at evaluating its potential as a pharmaceutical source of biologically active compounds, especially gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). The research confirmed the feasibility of introducing and cultivating B. officinalis in the Stavropol region, with high seed germination rates and significant oil yield. Chemical analyses identified high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (notably GLA up to 19.8%), phytosterols, vitamin E, squalene, phenolics, flavonoids, and amino acids in seeds, seed meal, and aerial parts.A method was developed and validated for enriching fatty acid fractions with GLA (up to 64%) via urea complexation. The oil and ethanol extracts from seed meal exhibited low toxicity (Class 4), pronounced anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, and antioxidant activity. Morphological and anatomical criteria were established for standardization, and draft quality standards for raw materials were developed. The methods and formulations were validated and approved for practical use by pharmaceutical quality control authorities and implemented in pharmaceutical education and industrial settings. These findings support the complex utilization of B. officinalis as a cost-effective and versatile source of therapeutic plant material.
