Definitions and criticisms of “academic productivism” on SciELO: A meta-research about Social Sciences and Humanities
AbstractThe notion of "academic productivism" refers to the pressure experienced by researchers to publish at an accelerated pace to meet institutional demands. This study proposes a content analysis of 58 articles published on the topic in the SciELO Brazil platform between 2008 and 2024. We emphasize four dimensions: definitions of productivism; criticisms toward the current evaluation model; impacts on the physical and mental health of researchers; and proposals for solutions and improvements to evaluate intellectual production. The results highlight the criticisms of assessments based on the quantity of publications, but there is little discussion of alternatives to reform such a system.
