Why Top-Down AI Strategies Fail: The Case for User-Driven Innovation and AI Literacy
This opinion paper challenges the conventional top-down approach to enterprise AI implementation, which has led to an 80% failure rate of AI projects. Drawing on research and case studies, I argue thatsuccessful AI adoption requires two fundamental shifts: (1) moving from technology-first to user-centricimplementation strategies that address actual pain points and leverage frontline expertise and (2)developing organization-wide AI literacy as the foundation for sustainable innovation. The paper showsthat bottom-up approaches yield higher adoption rates, better alignment with business needs, andimproved returns on AI investments. Organizations can achieve greater success by empowering users, conducting small-scale experiments based on actual needs, and systematically building AI literacy acrossall levels of the organization. This approach transitions from "AI for AI's sake" to AI as a practical solutionfor documented challenges.
