Radiologic CT Scan Assessment Of Eustachian Tube Dimensions Among Filipino Adults With Chronic Otitis Media at Rizal Medical Center: A Retrospective Study
ABSTRACTObjective: To determine radiologic dimensions of the eustachian tube of adult Filipinos diagnosed with chronic otitis media with and without cholesteatoma using temporal bone CT scans at the Rizal Medical Center. Methods:Design: Retrospective descriptive studySetting: Tertiary Government Training HospitalParticipants: The temporal bone CT scans of 69 patients with chronic otitis media with or without cholesteatoma diagnosed at Rizal Medical Center Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery from January 2020 to January 2023 were reviewed for the measurement of the Eustachian tube dimensions. Results: The average measurements of the pre-tympanic diameter and ET angle (Reid plane) in the group with cholesteatoma were found to be higher than those in the group without cholesteatoma. The pre-tympanic diameter was 4.1993 ± 0.50 compared to 4.002 ± 1.13, and the ET angle was 26.483 ± 3.86 compared to 24.649 ± 3.10. While the mean measurement of the tubotympanic angle in the group without cholesteatoma was greater than that in the group with cholesteatoma, with values of 141.994 ± 6.30 and 138.789 ± 7.13, respectively. The p-values for the pre-tympanic diameter, tubotympanic angle, and ET angle were 0.617, 0.198, and 0.098, respectively, p<0.05 indicating that there was no statistically significant differences in the ET dimensions among the group with cholesteatoma, without cholesteatoma and normal ears. Conclusion: The occurrence of cholesteatoma in individuals with chronic otitis media can be multifactorial. In our investigation, there was no statistical significance in Eustachian tube dimensions among individuals with normal ears and those with and without cholesteatoma. Consequently, these findings imply that Eustachian tube dimensions may not represent a primary etiological factor associated with chronic otitis media in adult Filipino patients.
