Pregabalin misuse: a case report
Pregabalin is a widely used medication primarily prescribed for the management of neuropathic pain and common psychiatric conditions due to its analgesic and anxiolytic properties. However, it has also been associated with cases of misuse, particularly among individuals with a history of substance use disorders. A case is presented of a 22-year-old male with a history of pregabalin misuse spanning one year, escalating his daily dosage to 2,250 mg/day. The patient experienced episodes of sudden muscle weakness, resulting in unanticipated falls and an inability to maintain grip on objects. These symptoms led him to seek medical attention. After discontinuing pregabalin, the patient did not experience withdrawal symptoms. Despite the therapeutic benefits of pregabalin, the potential for its abuse, particularly in at-risk populations, necessitates careful monitoring and prescribing practices.
