Social Media Impact on Youth: A Comprehensive Data Scientist's Perspective
Social media platforms play a significant role in the lives of young people aged 8 to 18, with substantial effects on their mental health, academic performance, social behavior, and identity development. This report, based on data science principles, compiles empirical evidence from peer-reviewed studies, longitudinal surveys, and meta-analyses conducted between 2020 and 2025 to quantify these impacts. Utilizing statistical methods such as regression analysis, meta-analysis, and effect size estimation, we identify both positive and negative effects of social media use, which are influenced by usage patterns, demographic factors, and specific features of different platforms. Key findings suggest that excessive use is associated with an increased risk of depression and anxiety, while also highlighting benefits like improved social connectivity and opportunities for self-expression. We critically evaluate methodological challenges, including self-reporting bias and limited access to data. The report offers data-driven recommendations for researchers, policymakers, and educators, emphasizing the importance of predictive modeling, longitudinal studies, and digital literacy interventions. This analysis provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and addressing the complex role of social media in youth development.
