Phra Mahachanok Commemorative Coins: A Royal Blessing of Perseverance
This article explores the symbolic significance of the Phra Mahachanok commemorative coins, created under the royal initiative of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), in conjunction with his literary work Mahajanaka. The royal narrative presents Mahajanaka not merely as a Bodhisattva from Buddhist scripture but as a modern leader who perseveres in the face of adversity. The article interprets this royal literary piece as a spiritual leadership guide encompassing perseverance (viriya pāramī), ethical governance (Dasavidha-rājadhamma), truth, compassion, and critical reasoning. It also details the specifications of the coin sets large edition, small edition, and the tri-metal edition and underscores their role as tangible representations of royal virtue and remembrance. Ultimately, the Phra Mahachanok coins and literature are portrayed as enduring legacies of Thailand’s beloved monarch, echoing the message: “Never give up.”
