The 9-Cell-SWOT Matrix: A Theoretical Framework for Dynamic Strategic Analysis
ABSTRACTThe traditional 2×2 SWOT analysis, while widely used, suffers from oversimplification in today's complex business environment. This paper introduces the 9-Cell-SWOT Matrix, a framework that integrates organizational traits (Strengths/Capabilities/Weaknesses), environmental factors (Opportunities/Trends/Uncertainties), and strategic actions (Chances/Potential/Threats). Grounded in dynamic capabilities and real options theory, this approach addresses key limitations of conventional SWOT: binary categorization, temporal rigidity, and threats oversimplification. The 9-cell matrix enables more nuanced strategic analysis, particularly valuable for navigating volatile markets. While conceptual, the framework offers a foundation for future empirical testing and practical application in strategic planning.
