A Survey on the Impact of Generative AI Tools in Academic Environments: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Way Forward
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly transforming the academic landscape by offering intelligent tools for writing, coding, designing, and learning. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of popular GenAI tools used in educational settings, including ChatGPT, Bard, GitHub Copilot, and DALL·E. It explores their practical applications for students, such as personalized learning, creative assistance, and real-time problem solving. The paper also critically examines associated challenges like academic dishonesty, factual inaccuracies, and over-dependence on AI. A personal case study illustrates the benefits and limitations of using these tools as a B.Tech CSE student. Finally, the paper highlights future opportunities, such as integrating GenAI with learning platforms, promoting prompt engineering, and developing explainable AI systems.
