Bridging the Gap: Reimagining Higher Education in India for Workforce Readiness
Abstract This research paper explores the critical challenges and opportunities within India’s higher education system, focusing on preparing students for the workforce in the context of the India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. As industries evolve rapidly due to technological advancements and global integration, there is an urgent need to align academic curricula with market demands. Indian students face multiple hurdles, which contribute to a growing skill gap between graduates and employability expectations. NEP 2020 presents a transformative framework aimed at bridging this divide through multidisciplinary learning, flexible course structures, and an emphasis on skill-based education. The study examines how student expectations have evolved shifting from purely theoretical learning to a strong demand for practical skills, internships, and real-world applications. It also evaluates how universities can modernize pedagogy, integrate industry driven content, and foster collaborations with the private sector to ensure better career outcomes. Emphasis is placed on soft skills, digital literacy, and ethical understanding alongside technical competencies. The paper concludes by offering strategic interventions for institutions to become more agile, industry responsive, and learner centric, thus creating a robust ecosystem that enhances both employability and innovation in alignment with India’s vision for a developed future under NEP 2020.
