Necessity of the Puranic Morality in the Global World: A Recherche Research

In the threshold of socio-technological progress one can notice the sharp fall in the ethical and moral values all round. In this context the necessity of the teachings of the Puranas, the vast store house of remarkable tales replete with moral and ethical teachings is undeniable. The eighteen major Puranas and a similar number of minor Puranas are very much informative to the students of Indian culture, philosophy, ethics and religion and are potent influences in the development of the moral and religious life of human beings. The aim of the Puranas is to mediate the profound and recondite truths of the Vedas and the Upanishads to the understanding of the common man and to impress upon the minds of the ordinary masses the essential and precious teachings of the Vedas and the Upanishadas in an easier manner through the entertaining stories that contain teachings - unique, but complementary to one another - to enrich humanity. Like the ancient Sanskrit Texts, this vast store house of remarkable tales throws revealing light on subtle moral problems, frequently convey the highest metaphysical truths with simplicity, directness and force, offer a rich tapestry of ethical and moral teachings, recognising the complexity and subjectivity inherent in human experience, provide timeless wisdom that remains relevant for today’s society, contain the earliest messages for preservation of environment and ecological balance and constitute the most authoritative commentary on Upanishadic teaching and emphasise the highest ideal of humanity “Friendliness towards all that lives” (sarva-bhootasuhritwa) which is very much needed in the present competitive era to make our ‘Global Village’ fit for us.
