Grassland restoration -A case of Gangta bet Island

1. Abstract The Great Rann of Kutch in Gujarat is a vast expanse of salt desert with raised landforms called “bets” that support unique flora and fauna. Among them, Gangta Bet, one of the smallest at 19.73 square kilometers stands out for its size, isolation and minimal human disturbance. This makes it a promising site for ecosystem restoration. The region including the nearby Banni grasslands has been invaded by Prosopis juliflora—an invasive species introduced in 1877 by the British and reintroduced in 1961 by Gujarat forest department. Although it provides fuel wood and shade it has caused ecological harm by altering soil components, lowering groundwater levels and curbing native vegetation growth. Today it covers nearly 40% of India’s land. Efforts to manage its spread are ongoing. The issue was even raised in the Supreme Court in Chennai, resulting in governmental orders aimed at its removal. Given Gangta Bet’s ecological value and manageable size, it offers an opportunity to study and apply restoration strategies to revive native grassland ecosystems..
