The Role of Government Policies in Promoting Sports Culture in India
This research paper explores the vital role that government policies play in promoting sports culture in India. With a focus on national development, youth engagement, and international representation, the Indian government has launched various schemes and policy frameworks aimed at enhancing sports infrastructure, athlete development, and community participation. This paper evaluates key initiatives such as Khelo India, Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), and National Sports Policy, analyzing their effectiveness in fostering a robust sports culture. The study uses a qualitative approach based on policy analysis and reviews of secondary data from official sources, research journals, and sports development reports. The findings highlight both achievements and gaps in policy implementation and offer recommendations for building a more inclusive, accessible, and performance-driven sports ecosystem. India’s journey toward becoming a sporting nation has been shaped significantly by government-led interventions aimed at bridging infrastructural gaps, nurturing talent, and fostering a culture of fitness and competitive sports. Through comprehensive schemes like Khelo India and TOPS, the government has made commendable strides in encouraging youth participation and international success. However, disparities in implementation, especially in rural areas, highlight the need for more inclusive and region-sensitive strategies. This study critically examines these policies and offers insights into how systematic improvements can build a stronger, more equitable sports ecosystem in India.
