FROM ORAL TRADITION TO CONTEMPORARY INSTRUCTION: A PROPOSED MOD-EL FOR TEACHING CA TRU SINGING BASED ON TRADITIONAL FOUNDATIONS
Abstract This article explores pedagogical approaches to teaching Ca Tru singing, a traditional scholarly form of Vietnamese music, from the perspectives of musicology and music education. Based on research into the acoustic standards and vocal techniques specific to Ca Tru, the study delves into the oral teaching method traditionally practiced by master artists, characterized by the processes of listening–imitating–internalizing, individualizing the vocal expression, and integrating poetry, melody, and rhythm. Building upon these foundations, the article proposes a model for Ca Tru instruction in the modern context that harmonizes traditional principles with contemporary pedagogical tools—such as digital archiving, video-based instruction, and flexible vocal classes. Notably, the central role of the master artist in inspiring learners, guiding aesthetic perception, and evaluating artistic quality is emphasized as a key factor in the sustainable preservation of Ca Tru.
