From equation to expression: positioning narrative as the epistemic pilot beyond mathematics and physics
This paper repositions narrative as a primary epistemic infrastructure capable of guiding, framing, and transcending both mathematical modeling and physical verification. While mathematics is often regarded as the mother of all disciplines and physics as the empirical compass of scientific truth, we argue that neither is sufficient for navigating the emergent challenges of the 21st century—ranging from AI consciousness to educational equity—without a narrative framework that contextualizes meaning, direction, and participation. Through a three-part epistemic contrast—mathematics as structural syntax, physics as observational validation, and narrative as teleological agency—we show how narrative serves not merely as a communication tool but as a cognitive pilot that determines what kinds of questions are asked, which truths are pursued, and whose experiences are encoded. We apply this framework to the educational context of Taiwan, where examination-based learning fails to cultivate learner autonomy or cross-domain meaning-making. We introduce the NarrQuest System, a platform that tracks tone evolution, supports narrative recomposition, and preserves voice-specific authorship via the Narrative Tone Seal. This platform reclaims tone—a traditionally suppressed but identity-rich dimension of language—as a key indicator of epistemic maturity. By integrating AI diagnostics, user-authored trajectories, and tone-indexed knowledge products, narrative is no longer peripheral. It becomes the central architecture for inquiry, visibility, and collective future-making.
