The Sacred Relics: Symbols of Buddha's Virtue and Enlightenment
The sacred relics (Phrathat), particularly the relics of the Buddha and arahants, are venerated objects believed to emerge miraculously after the cremation of enlightened beings. Revered throughout Buddhist traditions, these relics symbolize spiritual purity, enlightenment, and the supreme virtue of the Buddha and his disciples. According to Buddhist beliefs, the color and shape of the relics reflect the spiritual qualities of the individual such as the clear, spherical crystal-like relics of the Buddha; rice-grain-shaped relics of the chief disciples; and variously colored relics of other arahants. This article explores the origins, typologies, and symbolic meanings of Buddhist relics, with emphasis on their role in devotional practice, relic distribution after the Buddha’s Parinibbāna in Kusinārā, and their enshrinement in stupas across the Buddhist world.
