The Impact of Literature in Social Change with Reference to Select Indian Authors
Abstract Literature has historically functioned as a transformative force, reflecting and influencing social structures, norms, and ideologies. In the Indian context, literature serves not only as a cultural mirror but also as an agent of progressive change. This study explores how leading Indian authors such as Mulk Raj Anand, Raja Rao, R.K. Narayan, Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy, and Chetan Bhagathave used the literary form to interrogate issues like caste, gender, communalism, colonial legacy, and globalization. Through the critical examination of selected novels, the paper demonstrates how literature becomes a powerful medium for addressing social inequalities and envisioning innovative futures.
