Driving Sustainability through Green Supply Chains: A Comparative Study of Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki in the Indian Automative Sector
Abstract: This research investigates the Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices of two leading Indian automobile manufacturers- Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki, and their strategic actions toward sustainability in the context of an emerging economy. Using Triple Bottom Line (Elkington, 1997) framework and the Brundtland Commission’s definition of sustainability (1987), this research assesses GSCM actions of both the automobile manufacturers. Obtaining data from secondary data and through case analysis, the research assesses the key essentials of GSCM, such as eco-design, sustainable sourcing, renewable energy use, low-emission logistics, and the adoption of digital technologies such as IoT and blockchain. Tata Motors exemplifies a holistic strategy, closely aligning with national initiatives like FAME-II and significantly investing in renewable energy and electric mobility. Maruti Suzuki has emphasised on hybrid technology and energy-efficient operations to endorse environmental goals incrementally. Both firms have demonstrated progress in minimising carbon emissions, improving operational efficiency and transparency, albeit with different levels of technological integration and policy responsiveness. This research work offers policy recommendations to promote sustainable practices and identifies future research avenues in sector-specific concerns and customers’ perceptions. The study contributes to GSCM literature in emerging economies and provides actionable insights for manufacturers, policymakers, and sustainability advocates.
