Spade test
The spade test is a simple yet effective visual analysis of soil quality that can be conducted directly in the field using basic tools. It requires no specialized expertise and can be performed by anyone. By examining a soil sample extracted with a spade, we can assess whether the agronomic techniques used are supporting soil fertility. Compared to laboratory analyses, the spade test provides more immediate insights into soil health, including its structure, aeration, root penetration, water availability for plants, and the degree of crop residue decomposition. When performed regularly, it serves as a valuable tool for monitoring soil health over time.
