Boundless: A Sensory and Communication Travel Kit for Individuals with Disabilities
Travel remains a significant challenge for individuals with disabilities, particularly those facing sensory sensitivities and communication barriers. Current travel aids are often fragmented or fail to address both communication and sensory needs in a cohesive, user-friendly format. To address this issue, Boundless was developed which is a portable, inclusive travel kit that merges visual communication aids with sensory regulation tools to empower neurodivergent, autistic, and non-verbal travelers. The kit includes high-contrast communication cards for conveying essential needs such as dietary requests or assistance and sensory-support items such as UV-protective sunglasses, high-NRR earplugs, a fidget toy, and aromatherapy elements, all housed in a travel-friendly pouch. Grounded in inclusive and user-centered design principles, Boundless targets accessibility gaps frequently encountered in public spaces and transit systems. Preliminary evaluations indicate its potential to reduce anxiety, enhance independence, and foster dignity among users. While still in its prototype phase, its modular design and thoughtful component integration demonstrate a high degree of functional relevance. Informal feedback and accessibility literature support its alignment with user needs, particularly among those with autism spectrum disorders and sensory processing challenges. The project also opens opportunities for broader societal impact by promoting neuro-inclusive travel and reducing caregiver burden. With proper refinement and participatory testing, Boundless holds strong commercialization potential through collaborations with disability advocacy groups, tourism agencies, and e-commerce platforms focused on assistive products. Ultimately, this innovation exemplifies how empathetic design can bridge equity gaps and facilitate more inclusive travel experiences.
