X-FOREST: An Open-Source Drone–Rhizosphere Architecture for Accelerated Reforestation and Soil Regeneration
X‑FOREST is an open hardware/software platform to accelerate reforestation on degraded soils by coupling autonomous dew‑water logistics, a subterranean sensor–actuator Root‑Mesh, and transparent MRV (measurement, reporting, verification). This document defines the unified baseline and adds Appendix J — Growth‑Spine Ribbon (GSR): a thin, dry, modular ribbon installed per sapling that (i) reduces wind stress and sway, (ii) radiatively cools and directs dew to the microsite, and (iii) enables light, low‑cost sensing. The GSR adapts “dry”, mission‑hard procedures from the Open Space Elevator Cable (OSEC) — a multilayer, modular ribbon architecture originally designed for long‑tether applications — including scarf‑lap repairs, benzoxazine/cyanate‑ester film adhesives, aramid interleaf to stop delamination, resistive‑bleed for static/lightning, and low‑VIV geometry. See Section 0 for a plain‑language explainer and mapping. 90‑day program targets (field): survival +15–30% vs local practice; height/LAI +10–20%; RMS sway ↓≥20% on windy nights; dew at pellet ≥150–300 mL·wk⁻¹ in “dewy” seasons; zero wildlife entanglement; repair events <10 min each. MRV reports USD per surviving seedling and labor‑hours·ha⁻¹·month⁻¹.
