National Survey of Syringe Services Programs Regional Report for the Midwestern United States, 2022
As incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV infections related to injection drug use increases and as opioid-related overdose remains alarmingly high in the United States, it is imperative to understand the services provided for the prevention of these and other harms related to drug use. Syringe services programs (SSPs) are harm reduction organizations that provide evidence-based services to protect and promote the health and well-being of people who use drugs. The National Survey of Syringe Services Programs (NSSSP) is conducted annually to document the capacity and needs of SSPs to inform efforts to support and sustain SSPs nationwide. This brief report presents what SSPs located in the Midwest Region of the United States reported regarding their operational structure and services offered in 2022. Data for most of the key indicators are presented overall and by organizational type, as type can affect which services are offered, the way in which they are implemented, and the volume of participants accessing them. •Community-based organizations (CBOs): SSPs operated by community-based organizations with or without 501(c)(3) status. •Departments of public health (DPHs): SSPs operated by city, county, or state health departments. •Health care organizations (HCOs): SSPs operated by academic or non-academic health care organizations. •Other: SSPs operated by volunteer-only or other organizations.
